What do you refer blacks as in a history essay?

I'm writing a AP US History essay on WWI....what should I refer to blacks as without seeming offensive? Should I use ******, blacks or African-Americans? I understand that some names are appropriate/inappropriate during certain time periods, so what's appropriate in this situation?
