Can a lawsuit be reinstated after it is dropped?

My friend was suing someone and she was convinced that if she dropped the suit the oher party woulld settle. Now they have refused to settle the civil suit and have told her she gets nothing. She feels tricked. I know i have not provided much detail. She has a lawyer. suit was for $500,000. for the rest of her life on a business deal-family related.
