What breed of toy dog is best for a stay at home wife/stepmom?

I recently moved with my husband and I don't work so I was thinking about getting a puppy to keep me company while my boys were at work and school. I want something that will stay small and is good with children, strangers and other animals. I also would like that it not be to loud.
