After the war, Britain suffered an economic crisis they were given a loan from america called marshall aid but instead of investing it in industry like germany and france, they invested it in their empire. This meant that the british people lacked consumer goods and there were shortages in grain and bread. Bread was rationed after the war for the first time in 1947, and so were many other items this was because of the extremely cold winter they had which meant that many crops died and a rationing became a necessary factor for bringing economic recovery.
